Welcome to the State Public Defender Office!

The Idaho State Public Defender (SPD) Office is the first in the United States to consolidate all indigent public defense under one agency.

The Idaho Legislature and Gov. Brad Little created the SPD in 2023 and appointed State Public Defender Eric Fredericksen to run the agency later that year. The office officially opened on July 1, 2024, and will begin to manage all public defense in Idaho on Oct. 1, 2024.

Fourteen of Idaho’s 44 counties have institutional public defender offices – which means indigent defense is handled by state employees. These are the most populous counties in the state and have the biggest caseloads.

Public defense in Idaho’s other 30 counties will be handled by lawyers who have signed contracts with the SPD.

This website provides an explanation for the work the SPD does – and how we do it.
