The SPD is taking applications for student interns/externs for Spring 2026 semester

The SPD is looking for second- and third-year law students who are interested in working as interns and externs in our county offices across the state for spring semester 2026.

Intern/extern work will include reviewing court records and evaluating legal claims; drafting briefs; and conducting legal research. They may also communicate with clients; draft motions; and participate in court hearings.

Interns/externs will receive a stipend of $6,400 for 8 weeks. Those who agree to be placed in one of five rural offices (Burley, Jerome, Pocatello, Sandpoint, and Twin Falls) will receive a living expense stipend of $4,000 to assist with rental and other relocation expenses.

There is a lot more to it, so click here for more information on academic and legal requirements and what students need to do to apply.

Student applicants need to have a cover letter; a resume; their most recent law school transcript (unofficial okay); and a writing sample of ten pages or less. Excerpts are okay. Please tell us if any of the writing work is not your own.

Students should indicate on the cover letter which county SPD office is their first choice, which other ones they’d be willing to work at, and if they are able to temporarily relocate to one of our rural offices.

We are also interested in law students who are pursuing intern/externships in the summer and fall of 2026.

Students who have additional questions after reading  the intern/extern application document can email lindsey.welfley@spd.idaho.gov for more info.
