CLE: “What Public Defenders Need to Know about Idaho’s Treatment Courts”

November 20 @ 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm

Join 1st District Magistrate Judge Mayli Walsh on Nov. 20 at 12:30 MT for an hour-long session to learn about “The Responsibilities of Defense Attorneys in Idaho’s Treatment Courts.” Idaho’s Treatment Courts provide a community-based approach for people whose substance use disorders, mental health needs, or related behaviors brought them into the justice system.

Treatment courts aim to redirect people from jail or prison and into structured treatment, supervision, and accountability programs that support long-term recovery. Judge Walsh, who worked as a public defender in Kootenai County before being appointed in her current role in 2016, will go over concepts like the difference between sanctions, incentives, and insurance adjustments; share advice for defense attorneys when their client is being sanctioned; and discuss due process considerations in termination hearings and probation revocation.

Join us virtually on Nov. 20 at 12:30-1:30 p.m. MT / 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. PT. Upon registering, you will be sent a confirmation email and the link to attend via Teams will be included.
