SUMMARY:CLE - Ethical Communication: Representing Female Clients
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Washington State Office of Public Defense \n\n\n\nJoin Gail Brashear as she talks about her experiences as a legal professional and former client on best practices when working with female clients. Gail will provide insights for attorneys representing women clients in front-end legal matters and will focus on legal advocacy strategies\, effective client communication\, and issue spotting unique to women’s cases. Participants will learn practical\, trauma-informed approaches that can strengthen and improve legal outcomes with a specific lens toward the ethical principles at play. This extremely practical program will provide you with tools that you will be able to use right away in your practice\, whether you are a lawyer\, investigator\, social worker\, or a front line professional. \n\n\n\nGail Brashear is a Paralegal at the Seattle Clemency Project\, where her experience as a formerly incarcerated person provides unique support to clients seeking post-conviction relief. At age 15\, Gail was sentenced to 50 years in adult prison and served 25 years before earning early release in 2019. She subsequently earned her B.A. from Evergreen State College\, was a legislative intern to former Senator Jeannie Darneille\, and worked as a paralegal for Tolin Law Firm for almost 3 years. Gail serves on DOC’s Lived Experience Advisory Team\, is a board member of the Washington Prison History Project and regularly shares her knowledge of the carceral system as a guest lecturer and speaker. \n\n\n\nJoin the Washington State Office of Public Defense for this program virtually on June 24th from 1:00-2:00 p.m. MT / 12:00-1:00 p.m. PT. \n\n\n\n1.0 Ethics credit pending.
