Student Opportunities

The State Public Defender (SPD) has filled all 20 intern and extern spots in our county offices across the state for spring and summer semesters in 2026.

Current first- and second-year law students interested in interning for the SPD in 2027 can still submit applications, but staff will not begin review of those until fall of 2026.

Spots filled up quickly this year, so law students interested in a career in public defense may want to apply early if they are interested in a 2027 internship.

Interns/externs receive a stipend of $6,400 for 8 weeks. Those who agree to be placed in one of five rural offices (Burley, Jerome, Pocatello, Sandpoint, and Twin Falls) will receive a living expense stipend of $4,000 to assist with rental and other relocation expenses.

There is a lot more to it, so click here for more information on academic and legal requirements and what students need to do to apply.

Student applicants need to have a cover letter; a resume; their most recent law school transcript (unofficial okay); and a writing sample of ten pages or less. Excerpts are okay. Please tell us if any of the writing work is not your own.

Students should indicate on the cover letter which county SPD office is their first choice, which other ones they’d be willing to work at, and if they are able to temporarily relocate to one of our rural offices.

Students who have additional questions after reading  the intern/extern application document can email lindsey.welfley@spd.idaho.gov for more info.
